Eramet, a French global mining and metallurgy group active in metals for energy transitions in Indonesia for 17 years, announces a strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) through a signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The partnership aims to strengthen the electronic vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Indonesia.

The MoU signing ceremony has been officiated in presence of Director of Eramet Indonesia, Bruno Faour and Head of the Geological Agency’s Center for Mineral, Coal and Geothermal Resources (PSDMBP), Agung Pribadi, that also witnessed by the Special Staff of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) for the Acceleration of Mineral and Coal Governance Ministry of ESDM Irwandy Arif and Deputy Head of the Economic Department Embassy of France in Indonesia, Pauline Leduc on Monday (6/5/2024) in Jakarta.

The partnership between Eramet in Indonesia and the PSDMBP Geological Agency is a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Governments of France and Indonesia in the field of Energy and Mineral Resources signed in 2011. This partnership covers joint studies on critical minerals in the country, including studies of potential lithium resources. Various aspects from technical studies, exploration to human resource capacity development will be covered by this partnership.

The Director of Eramet Indonesia, Bruno Faour, expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership. “Eramet has been present in Indonesia for 17 years and  committed to supporting the Indonesian government’s efforts to become a responsible global player driving the world’s energy transition. This partnership is an important step forward in defining the resources available to supply the metals of the energy transition. Eramet will provide the Indonesian government with its international expertise in the field of energy transition metals,” said Bruno.

Special Staff of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) for the Acceleration of Mineral and Coal Governance Ministry of ESDM Irwandy Arif said that the ESDM Ministry welcomed the opportunity to work with Eramet in Indonesia. According to him, the government is now focusing on the EV amidst the energy transition, and it takes collaborations, including a joint study, as the development.

“Electric vehicles are one of the government’s focuses in boosting energy transition and to realize this, cooperation with various parties is needed. A joint study on critical minerals, especially on the potential of lithium reserves in undeveloped areas in Indonesia, has never been done before. Ultimately, this study serves to understand Indonesia’s potential in the electric vehicle industry supply chain and help develop an electric vehicle industry strategy in Indonesia,” explained Wafid.

Deputy Head of the Economic Department Embassy of France in Indonesia, Pauline Leduc expressed her support for this cooperation and highlighted the importance of international partnerships in promoting the sustainable development of the mineral sector in Indonesia.

Indonesia is a strategic partner for France and this partnership demonstrates the close relationship between our two countries. We hope that this partnership can build closer synergies between the private sector and the government, especially in the electric vehicle battery ecosystem.
